Despite being enrolled in AP English and taking English Lit courses, somehow I had never been introduced to Wuthering Heights – and there are very few classics I hadn’t read. So for this month’s Reading Challenge of reading something you wished you read in High School, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to dive into it.
The characters were complex and the emotional magnitude extends far beyond the pages while I was reading. They were selfish, violent and contriving. Each one of them seemed to have had their fair share of abuse in some form and were utterly tormented. It seemed that everyone was out to make not only themselves miserable, but everyone else around them as well – somehow even after their deaths!
“People feel with their hearts, Ellen, and since he has destroyed mine, I have not power to feel for him.”
The poison and cycle of abuse continued for generations, but oddly I did feel that there was a sense of hope and peace at the end shown through the younger Cathy and Hareton’s relationship and implication that the older Cathy and Heathcliff were reunited after death.
